End of Quarter!

The first quarter has flown by! Porfolios will be read and report cards will be sent home in early November. The fifth grade teachers are looking forward to meeting with parents on one of the two November conference days: November 5 or November 13. If you need to make an appointment, please call Mrs. Conkling in the middle school office.

Community Service

Community Outreach

The two fifth grade girls’ classes enjoyed recycling Calvert’s paper the past two months. In November Ms. Radways class takes over!

Another community service activity taken on by the fifth graders was the annual UNICEF drive. After discussing the programs of UNICEF and viewing a video, teams of two visited the lower school classes on Wednesday to hand out orange collection boxes and explain some of the children’s programs funded by UNICEF, such as immunizations, malaria nets and clean water programs.

On the last Friday of October, students had the option of dressing up in costume or dressing down in orange and black for a $2 donation to UNICEF.

Back to School Notes

We are excited and ready to get started! The first months in middle school will focus on getting and staying organized. The students will learn how to use a planner to keep track of their assignments and together we will organize and maintain a notebook of our work. At the end of each unit or quarter parents can help students clean out the previous assignments and handouts and file them away for later use during exams. (Oops, did I use the E word? Don't worry, learning how to prepare for and take semester exams is a fifth grade task which we work on together and take very slowly, one step at a time.)

Tech classes will begin immediately so that your son or daughter will become comfortable with his or her new computer quickly. However, every assignment does not have to be typed, especially early in the year! Teachers will always accept neatly written work.

Important Dates:

Fifth Grade Parents' Night is September 4 and will present an overview of the middle school and the fifth grade. On September 22, you will have an opportunity to meet your child's teachers and follow their schedule at the Middle School Parents' Night. We are looking forward to meeting you!

Middle School picture day is September 17.

Grade 5  Intramurals begin on September 29.
